Skulls belong among the strongest props that can be put into a scene. The set of resin skulls from the Italian brand Royal Model is cut for figures at a size of 54 mm. The figure in the name gives the size of the figures the castings are intended for; it is not a scale.
The skull as a visual motif has gone with European art since the Middle Ages, when it recalled the transience of life. In modeling it works in much the same way: a single detail like this in the corner of a scene shifts the reading of the whole vignette from description to statement. It will serve in fantasy subjects, in pirate and catacomb scenes, in historical scenes and on bases where a figure is meant to look menacing. Bone is not white. It looks best from a cream to grayish undercoat into which a thinned brown is let so that it fills the eye sockets and the rows of teeth. Once dry, the raised edges are gone over with a lighter tone with a dry brush. A greenish hint suggests moss, while darker patches suggest soil. Knock the sheen back at the end with a matte varnish. Lay the pieces out across the area one by one so that they do not look like a heap.
