In the Vallejo range the shade carries the designation 69.039 and the name Grey Z. It falls into the gray family of the Mecha Color line, which the Spanish manufacturer built around models of robots, walking machines and equipment from the world of science fiction. This line has a whole scale of gray tones, from near white through medium to very dark, and Grey Z occupies the middle of it with a slightly cool undertone shifted toward blue.
A medium gray tends to be the basic area on a mech on which the rest of the build stands: the large panels of the hull, shoulder covers, legs above the knee joint. Because the tone is neutral, it will take both a lighter zenithal spray and dark picking out of the panel lines over it. That is exactly why the gray shades of this family are often mixed with one another, and the difference between neighboring numbers serves to tell individual plates apart without making the model look motley.
The binder is acrylic and it thins with water. The consistency is set so that the paint passes through the nozzle of an airbrush without further thinning; when spraying, a low pressure and several thin coats instead of one heavy one help. It is applied by brush as well, only it is advisable to spread a drop quickly, because it becomes tacky fairly briskly. The dried film is completely matte, with no glossy islands, so washes, pigments and a dry brush all hold on it.
Seventeen milliliters of the material in an upright bottle with a dropper. Dispensing drop by drop makes mixing exact ratios easier and limits the drying of what is left. Before use it is good to shake the bottle properly.
