Brown Sand RLM79

Vallejo Brown Sand RLM79 — acrylic modeling paint, 17 ml

This product is a modeling paint, not a kit. The shade belongs to the Vallejo Model Color range — matte, water-thinnable acrylic paints in a 17 ml bottle with a dropper. Model Color is thicker and heavily pigmented, because it is developed for brush application; for an airbrush you have to thin it with water or Vallejo thinner. The Model Air range is thinner and ready to spray without thinning — this paint does not belong to it.

About the RLM 79 shade

RLM is the shade system of the German Reich Air Ministry (Reichsluftfahrtministerium). RLM 79 (Sandgelb, later rather Sandbraun — sand brown) is the key color of the desert camouflage of German aircraft. It was introduced at the turn of 1941 and 1942, when German units were operating in North Africa and in the Mediterranean: the upper surfaces of tropical machines carried RLM 79 and the lower surfaces the light RLM 78. During 1942 the shade shifted into a darker, browner tone — which is why the shade is named Brown Sand rather than a purely yellow sand.

Use

• With a brush straight from the bottle; for an airbrush thin with water or Vallejo thinner.
• Shake thoroughly before use — the pigment settles at the bottom.
• A lighter sand color covers worse over a dark base: apply thin coats over a light base.
• An ideal base for desert weathering — dust filters, a wash into panel lines, faded areas.
• A matte surface — spray a gloss varnish over it before decals and knock it back at the end.
