A small light gravel of 1 to 2 mm grade for verges, yards and compacted areas around buildings on a diorama.
Responsibility details are not available.
The medium grade of 1 to 2 mm is the most usable one in this color. The grain is already clearly visible but does not yet look like stones, so it suits a verge beside asphalt, a compacted yard by a farm building, the area around a shelter or a gravel approach track. In 1:48 it looks like quarry gravel, in 1:35 like small pebbles under the feet of a figure.
Terrain is rarely formed by a single size of grain. The most faithful-looking area is one where the coarser material stays in the track left by the tracks and at the edges, while the middle of the road is covered by a finer fraction compacted by traffic. Proceed from the coarsest to the ever finer and fill the gaps with the last layer, so that the area does not look holed. Never make the transition between two grades a straight line; push the boundary about with a soft brush.
On a slope it pays to glue in parts, otherwise the grain will slide down before the binder goes tacky. Horizontal areas only need flooding with thinned glue from above. Once the layer has hardened, go over it with a finger: what comes loose would come loose later under the model, and it is better to tap it off at once and make it up than to look for loose grain under the wheels of a finished building.
Excess tapped off can be returned, only let it dry completely so that it does not foul the rest of the stock with hardened lumps. Work over a mat with a rim or over a sheet of paper bent into a channel; from that the grain is poured back comfortably and does not stay scattered over the table.
