A scatter material with the finest grain in a brown earth shade. It serves as the bottom layer of terrain, as soil on paths and as a base under coarser growth.
Responsibility details are not available.
Terrain is built from the bottom up and the first layer decides how everything above it will look. A fine scatter covers the texture of plaster and plywood, evens out brush marks and gives an area the velvety, slightly grainy character that the eye reads as packed soil. Only onto such a base can coarser tufts, grass and bushes be laid without bare backing showing between them.
The material is scattered into a layer of glue, or scattered dry with the glue then dropped on from above. The second procedure gives a more natural surface, because the grains settle under their own weight. It is better to build the density in two passes: the first thin layer covers the base, the second is laid only in places, so that lighter and darker islands appear. An evenly scattered area always looks artificial.
The earth shade goes with everything that comes onto it and softens transitions better than green scatters do. It pays to use it to edge the margins of grassy areas, to add it at the trunks of trees and to rub it with a finger into the places where dust would gather in nature. A bag of this volume will do for several tens of square centimeters of area, depending on how thickly the material is laid.
