Grunge Brown

A dirty brown for leather, wood and tarnished metal

Grunge Brown is a murkier brown with no red cast, the kind that suits worn leather, weather-beaten wood, sacking and areas that are meant to act neglected. Within the Game Air palette it is a shade of medium covering power, filled straight away in a form an airbrush will manage with no further adjustment. Once dry it holds a matte texture, so pigments and glazes sit on it well.

What sets it apart from the other browns in the palette

Beside it stand warm browns with a marked red undertone in the same palette and dark, almost black-brown tones for deep shadows. This shade lies between them and is deliberately grayed. If you need a bright leather brown for saddles and straps, reach for the warmer variant. For sunken grooves and the deepest places, on the contrary, the darker of the pair suits better.

There is also a choice between the version for an airbrush and a thicker form for a brush. Spraying is faster on the large areas of cloaks and tents; a brush manages precisely aimed small things with no masking. The color result stays comparable in both cases; what changes is the working procedure and the consumption.

Shake the bottle before use, as brown pigments settle to the bottom particularly willingly. Let every coat dry before you lay the next one, or the application will draw together into puddles. A pressure of around one and a half atmospheres and a nozzle of medium size match the nature of the paint; at a lower pressure the spray coarsens and the surface takes on a grainy texture.

The shade gets on well with the water-thinnable glazes of the same brand, so shading into the hollows can follow directly on from it.
