Vallejo Gunmetal (Metallic) 17 ml — dark metal Model Air metallic

A Vallejo metallic acrylic paint from the Model Air line in a dropper bottle with a volume of 17 ml. Model Air is a water-thinnable acrylic formulated for the airbrush — the thin consistency usually allows spraying straight from the bottle, or after thinning with Vallejo airbrush thinner. This is a modeling paint, not a kit.

Use

Of the whole metal quartet Gunmetal is the darkest — a dark gray metal with a cast toward blue-gray, exactly the shade of blued gun steel.

• Weapon barrels — from infantry rifles through machine guns to gun barrels.
• Breeches, mechanisms and metal parts of armament, where a light steel would look unconvincing.
• Worn steel surfaces — spots polished by long service and abrasion.
• Engine parts, exhausts, transmissions and technical components.

How to tell it from neighboring colors

If Gunmetal is too dark for you and you want a lighter, cool steel for blades, tools or worn armor, use the Steel shade. For bright, light metal of bare aluminum surfaces on aircraft and wheel hubs Aluminum is the one. And for uncamouflaged and training machines of the Luftwaffe Silver RLM01 is the historically accurate choice. A proven procedure: spray the barrel with Gunmetal and go gently over the edges and the most worn spots with steel — that gives a three-dimensional transition from dark metal to polished.

Working with metallic paint

• The heavy metal pigment sinks to the bottom of the bottle and separates from the binder; with a dropper bottle you only notice by the poor result. Always mix thoroughly until the contents are uniform.
• The metallic effect comes out on a smooth, glossy base — it pays to sand and polish the primer, because on a flat, rough surface the reflection scatters and the paint turns gray.
• A metallic coat is harder to mask and to spray over than ordinary covering paint. Apply it last, once the other shades are finished.
