This is a ready-made shade from a range the manufacturer mixes directly to the colors of Gundam kits. It does away with the most unpleasant part of the work, namely hitting a saturated red by mixing your own and then having to mix it again when it runs out during the second coat. The designation HGQ-07 belongs to the red version of the robot from the GQuuuuuuX series, but the paint is usable anywhere a semi-gloss red is called for.
The paint is a water-thinnable acrylic and it is ready to use straight from the bottle. Stir it thoroughly before the work, because the pigment sinks to the bottom while it stands and unstirred paint changes both the shade and the sheen. It goes on with a brush as well as with an airbrush, always in several thin coats rather than one heavy one; a thin coat preserves the detail and does not run into the engraved recesses. Let the surface dry between coats. Choose the thinner from the same range, as the manufacturer's instructions say, because a thinner meant for another type of paint can curdle the film. The surface underneath must be clean and degreased.
A semi-gloss surface is a grateful thing on robots: it does not pull reflections the way a high gloss does, and decals as well as a washable paint for accentuating the recesses slide over it nicely. A saturated red covers better over a light primer than straight over dark plastic. If you are doing several parts at once, spray them in one go so that they have the same shade and the same degree of sheen.
For builders of robots and plastic models who want the shade exactly as the subject has it and do not want to mix it. The paint is supplied on its own; the thinner, the brushes and the kit are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.
