About product

IJA Chrome Yellow 17 ml - Vallejo, Model Air line

A deep chrome yellow from the Japanese army palette by Vallejo. It is a water-thinnable acrylic in a matte finish, supplied in a 17 ml dropper bottle. It belongs to the Model Air line, which has finely ground pigments and comes from the factory thinned so that it can be sprayed straight from the bottle. That sets it apart from the thick Model Color line by the same maker, which is meant for a brush and has to be thinned before airbrushing. This is a modeling paint, not a kit - the package holds the paint only.

What the color represents

The abbreviation IJA stands for the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force. Do not confuse it with IJN, the Imperial Japanese Navy: these were two separate services with different color palettes, and a shade from one cannot automatically be carried over to the machines of the other. The striking chrome yellow is one of the typical recognition features of Japanese aircraft of the Second World War - from the fall of 1942 the machines carried a yellow identification band on the leading edge of the wing, roughly from the root to mid-span. You can use the same yellow for small markings, warning features, trainers and secondary surfaces.

Use

  • Shake the bottle thoroughly before use - the pigment settles to the bottom.
  • It is sprayed straight from the dropper bottle at a pressure of about 0.5-1 bar; if needed it can be thinned with water or with airbrush thinner of the same brand.
  • Yellow covers poorly - apply it in several thin coats over a light base (a white or light gray primer).
  • Spray identification bands over dry camouflage using masking tape; the paint can also be applied with a brush.
  • It dries quickly and forms a durable matte film; it is a good idea to overcoat a matte surface with gloss varnish before decals.

Who the paint is for

For modelers of Japanese aircraft of the Second World War who need a faithful yellow for leading edges and markings, and for anyone looking for a deep yellow ready to spray. The paint is water-thinnable, so the airbrush and brushes are cleaned with water or an acrylic cleaner - with no aggressive solvents.

A modeling paint for airbrush and brush, not a kit. Ensure good ventilation while spraying and protect your airways (a respirator), ideally use a spray booth. Keep out of the reach of children.

FAQ

No. The Model Air line comes pre-thinned from the factory and is sprayed straight from the bottle (at roughly 0.5-1 bar). Just shake it well. Depending on the airbrush and the weather it can be thinned with water or with airbrush thinner of the same brand. What you do have to thin is the thick Model Color line, which is meant for a brush.

It is not. IJA is the Imperial Japanese Army Air Force, IJN the Imperial Japanese Navy. They were two separate services with their own color palettes, so do not mix the shades up between them.

Yellow pigments generally have lower covering power. Spray a light base (a white or light gray primer) and then the yellow in several thin coats. One heavy coat will not solve the problem, it will only flood the detail.

No, this is a standalone modeling paint in a 17 ml bottle. The kit, glue and other accessories are not included.
