The light blue-gray Lichtblau RLM 76, the standard shade of the lower surfaces of German aircraft of the Second World War. A 10 ml bottle for spraying with a gun.
Responsibility details are not available.
RLM 76 is a light blue-gray that from 1941 appeared on the lower surfaces and fuselage sides of practically every German fighter aircraft. It replaced the older RLM 65 and was designed so that the machine would blend against the sky not only from below but also seen from the side. Depending on the production batch and the age of the coat, the real tone ranged from almost white through a greenish cast to a markedly bluer shade, so the differences visible in period photographs are not a fault of reproduction.
It is essential on Messerschmitt Bf 109s from the F version upwards, on Focke-Wulf Fw 190s, on Bf 110 and Ju 88 night fighters and on late machines that gained mottling in darker greens along the fuselage sides. It also serves well as a light base on which soft transitions to the dark fields of the upper camouflage are easily created, and as an undercoat for the fading of fabric control surfaces.
It is a paint on a cellulose base, even though convention groups it with the acrylics. It is thinned with the organic Mr. Color Thinner, or with its self-leveling counterpart; the recommended ratio lies between 1:1 and 2:1. It is intended for the airbrush, not for a brush. It dries within minutes to a smooth surface on which decals and later washes sit down well, and thin coats will not cover the fine engraving. The bottle holds 10 ml, which at ordinary thinning is enough for several machines in 1:72 as well as 1:48 scale. Anyone who wants a shade faded by sunlight adds a drop of white to the paint and uses it to lighten the middle of larger areas.
