The spray holding 170 ml lays a transparent gloss film over finished painting. It also contains a component that absorbs ultraviolet radiation, which slows the fading of the pigments and the yellowing of clear parts on models standing in the light in a display case. For a collection meant to last years on a shelf by a window, that is a difference visible to the naked eye.
A smooth gloss surface is a condition for laying decals down cleanly – on a matte and microscopically textured area air is trapped under the carrier film and a silvery haze appears. In the same way, a wash over gloss slides into the engraved seams and does not stay in blotches. The sequence tends to be: paint, gloss, decals, gloss again, weathering and finally the degree of sheen you want.
Shake the can for a good while before use, apply from a distance of around twenty centimeters and in several light passes instead of one wet coat. With varnishes in a spray can a heavy layer tends to run down the edges and to dissolve a fresh coat underneath. Let the model dry in a dust-free space.
Work at ordinary room temperature and lower humidity; cold or damp air is the most common cause of a varnish going white. Ventilate the space while spraying and protect the can from heat.
