The needle is the most sensitive component of an airbrush. It moves inside the nozzle, and how far it is drawn back decides how much paint passes out, so the whole spray pattern depends on its condition. The tip only has to bend or go blunt and the airbrush starts to spray off center, to spit paint or not to close at all. Use

• Always draw the needle out backwards; pulling it forward bends the tip inside the nozzle.
• Wipe it with a soft cloth before inserting it, as dried paint on the shaft damages the seal.
• Slide it in gently as far as it goes and only then tighten the lock.
• Do not straighten a bent tip; the result will no longer be symmetrical and the needle will spray to one side.
• Store the needle in its sleeve; lying loose it will bend against anything on the bench.
• When cleaning, always pull the cloth from the shaft toward the tip, never the other way.
