A replacement M68 gun barrel of 105 mm caliber for models of the M1 Abrams tank in 1:35 scale. It replaces the barrel from the kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
The first production Abrams tanks carried a rifled gun of 105 mm caliber designated M68, that is a licensed form of the widespread British weapon that a number of other Western tanks used as well. Only the later M1A1 received a smoothbore gun of 120 mm caliber. The caliber of the barrel is therefore the main clue on an Abrams model as to which version it is: a barrel of 105 mm caliber belongs to the early form of the vehicle, not to the later machines.
The barrel is the most conspicuous part of the whole model and every deviation shows on it. The replacement part keeps an exact circular section and axis along its whole length and carries a correctly shaped muzzle. It also does away with cleaning up the lengthwise seam, which on split barrels from a kit takes more work than gluing the turret together.
First try the fit of the barrel dry and, if need be, carefully widen the opening in the gun mantlet, so that the part seats without pressure and stays on the axis. The part is not polystyrene, ordinary cement for plastic kits will not hold on it, so use super glue or epoxy. Cut excess material and traces of manufacture away with a sharp blade a little clear of the part and sand the remainder off. Wash and degrease the barrel before painting, so that the paint holds on the smooth surface.
For builders of early Abrams tanks in 1:35 scale who object to the seam on the plastic barrel or whose part from the kit has warped. Check the fit on the axis dry according to the instructions of your kit. The package holds the barrel. The tank kit, paints and glue are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.
