An injection-molded plastic kit of four figures of German infantrymen in 1:35 scale from Master Box. The box contains one sprue with the figures and a separate sprue with weapons and equipment. The soldiers are depicted in winter clothing – in greatcoats, or a reversible parka and heavy trousers – matching the fighting in the Ardennes in December. The set is a companion piece to the American airborne infantry figures from the same series, so both sides can be combined in a single diorama.
In mid-December 1944, the German army launched an offensive in the Ardennes, known as the Battle of the Bulge. One of the key objectives was the Belgian town of Bastogne, an important road junction. The town was defended by units of the US 101st Airborne Division and reinforcements, which were surrounded and outnumbered for several days. The German advance stalled there, and the siege was broken only with the arrival of Allied armored units. The fighting took place in freezing cold, snow and fog, which hampered supply and air support on both sides. The offensive ultimately failed to achieve its objective and inflicted heavy losses on the German side that could no longer be replaced. The figures in the set represent ordinary infantrymen – this is a modeling depiction of a historical event, without any heroizing.
Remove the parts with side cutters, sand down the seam lines (watch the arms, shoulders and coat hems), and glue with cement for plastic. Apply a primer before painting. For the winter uniforms, work with a muted palette – grayish greens and grays; the reversible parka lets you paint either the white winter side or the camouflage-patterned side. Paint the skin from a mid-tone flesh color, use a wash in the folds and shadows, and brighten the raised areas. Eyes at 1:35 scale are tiny – a dark line and the whites are enough; too much detail looks unnatural. Shade the equipment (belts, pouches, bread bags, canteens) in different leather and fabric tones so the figure does not blend together. Finish with dust and mud effects on the boots and trouser hems, and unify everything with a matte varnish.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
