About product

Sanding Sponge 320 (6 pcs) — Mirage Hobby

A pack of six flexible sanding sponges with a grit of 320 from Mirage Hobby. This is not a kit or a paint — it is a tool and consumable material for coarser surface preparation. The designation 320 reads the same way as P320: the lower the number, the coarser the grit.

Where grit 320 sits in the process — right at the start

This is the coarsest of the sanding sponges in this range, and it belongs at the start of surface work: removing sprue-gate remnants after snapping a part off the sprue, leveling filler in seams and joints, rough-shaping surfaces and sanding down coarser unevenness. It sands fast and removes material — which is exactly why the job does not end here. Coarse work leaves scratches that must be progressively erased with finer grits; each following stage removes the scratches left by the one before. Skip a stage and spray straight away, and you will see coarse scratches show through under the paint — every one of them stands out under a glossy paint or metallic finish. So follow grit 320 with finer stages: Mirage also offers finer grits, and for final smoothing before spraying and polishing to a gloss, the very fine P2000 and P3000 sponges from AK interactive are a good fit — you will find the whole range with us.

Why a sponge and not sandpaper

  • Flexibility — the foam pad conforms to flat, rounded and hard-to-reach surfaces alike. Around a roughly filled curve on a fuselage or car body it seats over the whole area, whereas flat paper could never level the shape evenly.
  • Withstands bending — it does not crease or crack the way sandpaper does, which quickly folds and tears at a bend.
  • Spreads the pressure — with coarse grit, the biggest risk is sanding through an engraved panel line; the flexible layer spreads the pressure out and lowers that risk.

Wet sanding

For coarse sanding, which produces the most waste, working with water is most valuable. Water binds the dust, so there is no dust cloud — and plastic and filler dust is harmful to health and should never be inhaled. The abrasive also does not clog with sanded-off filler, which otherwise gums up the grit and stops the sponge from cutting, and the surface comes out smoother after wet sanding.

Who it is for

For anyone filling seams, leveling fuselage joints, or cleaning up parts after cutting them from the sprue — from builders of aircraft and vehicles to figure painters and diorama builders.

The abrasive is a consumable material. Sand wet, do not inhale the dust, and use a respirator for dry sanding. Fillers, paints and glue are not included in the package.

FAQ

It is the coarsest of the sanding sponges in this range. The lower the number, the coarser the grit — 320 reads the same way as P320. It removes material fast, so it suits rough work, not the final finish.

Not on its own. Coarse sanding leaves scratches that must be progressively erased with finer stages — each step removes the scratches from the one before. Skip a stage and coarse scratches will show through under the paint, standing out under a glossy or metallic finish. Very fine P2000 and P3000 sponges follow up for final smoothing before spraying and polishing.

The foam pad is flexible, so it conforms to flat, rounded and hard-to-reach surfaces that flat paper cannot level evenly. It does not crease or crack. The flexible layer also spreads out the pressure, lowering the real risk of sanding through an engraved panel line with coarse grit.

Plastic and filler dust is harmful to health and should not be inhaled. Water binds it, so there is no dust cloud. The abrasive also does not clog with sanded-off filler, so it lasts longer and the surface comes out smoother.
