An opaque base coat of metallic paint in the shade of steel forged to red. It determines the final coloring of a part and is the only one of the four that is applied over the whole area.

Forged Red in the base version has a special standing among the four levels. Whereas the shading and light bottles work only in the hollows and on the edges, this one goes over the whole area of a part and determines what color the metal will have at all. The shade is aimed at steel forged to red, that is, at the impression of iron drawn from a forge, not at a bright signal red.
The base is the most saturated of the four and after two thin coats covers the ground so that it no longer shows through. The surface stays finely grainy to the touch of light, but not matte: the metal particles in it hold a reflection that comes into play when the model is tilted. A flat area therefore does not act like a poster; small scratches and the traces of a brush, on the contrary, are more visible in a metal film than in an ordinary opaque paint, so it pays to pull long strokes in one direction.
To close the transition, the system reckons with a darker shading into the hollows and a light finishing of the edges; both are separate bottles. On its own this paint gives an even metal surface with no three-dimensional play. A dark, smoothly sprayed ground suits beneath it, because every unevenness of the ground is accentuated in a metal reflection. It therefore pays to devote time to sanding the joints and cleaning up the mold parting lines: a metal surface draws attention to itself and an unfiled joint stands out on it far sooner than under a matte coat, which absorbs light.
