A gold that is meant to have depth

Arcane Gold in the darkened form is intended for places where a glossy gold on its own would merge into one shining area. An ornament, a chain, a raised trim or a rune engraving need a darker tone beneath them, or they turn into an illegible blur. The shade stays gold, only shifted toward warmth and darkness, so it does not act like a brown paint laid over metal but like gold in cover.

The look on a broken-up surface

When a thin coat is led into an engraved pattern, the drawing steps out and the eye reads it even on a small figure. On a finished model that shows in the ornament holding its shape even from a distance, whereas without the shadow usually only the sheen is visible. What is essential is leaving the neighboring area lighter; the contrast between a groove and a face is the only thing that creates the impression of depth in metal. A heavily applied coat, on the contrary, fills the groove up to the rim and the three-dimensional effect disappears altogether.

What it is suited to

It does the most work on fantasy armor, on temple and ceremonial accessories, on the fittings of chests and on figures with rich relief. It works equally well on older tools and on the brass parts of historical vehicles, where metal is meant to look used. The bottle carries a single shade in a shadow role and includes neither the base coat nor the light finishing of the edges; those are kept separately and have to be obtained apart if you want the transition carried through to the end. On a figure you will hold in your hand it proves useful to lead the drawing in small sections and to check as you go whether the pattern is legible at arm's length too, not only under a magnifier.
