Vampiric Purple is a deep purple with a cool ring to it, that is exactly what is looked for with undead and vampire motifs. It can be used in two ways: as a color of its own for a cloak or cloth, or as a shadow coat applied over an already finished pale flesh ground.
The second use is the more interesting. Anyone wanting a cool shadow over light flesh usually prepares a heavily thinned purple glaze and spreads it across the face. The typical trouble arises in the process: the glaze dries before it can be spread and a sharp edge of a dried bead is left on the cheek. That then has to be laboriously painted over with flesh and the whole procedure repeated. A ready paint with controlled drying does not form that edge: the pigment draws into the grooves by itself and the area stays clean.
For the role of a shadow the paint is applied only into the hollows with the tip of a fine brush, not across the whole area. The surplus can be drawn off with the edge of a dry brush while it is still damp. As a full color for a cloak, by contrast, it calls for one continuous stroke across the whole part.
Paired with light flesh and with a blood red it forms the usual trio of a vampire scene. On metal parts, above all on old silver and pewter, it can damp the sheen down and add an impression of cold without the metal losing its glint entirely.
