About product

Centurion tie-down loops, style 3, in 1:35 scale from Lithokraft

Resin tie-down loops for models of the British Centurion main battle tank in 1:35 scale, in the pattern designated style 3. The loops around the hull served for lashing down a tarpaulin, cargo and equipment, and on injection-molded kits they tend to be reduced to a molded lump with no hole through it. A resin print holds a thin profile, so the loop reads as a loop and not as a lug.

The real subject

The Centurion was designed at the very end of the Second World War as a British universal tank that was to combine firepower, armor and mobility in one machine. It was too late for the fighting, but it stayed in service for decades and became one of the most successful tanks of the post-war era. It was given progressively heavier armament, from the 20-pounder up to the British 105 mm L7 gun. It fought in Korea, in the Middle East and in Vietnam and served in a great many countries. Crews routinely lashed equipment to the hull, so the tie-down loops are a prominent detail on it.

Building and painting tips

Cut the supports and the remains of the print raft away with a sharp scalpel over a mat; do not break them off. Level the cut with a file or a sanding sponge under water so that no dust is raised. Wash the parts in warm soapy water before painting and let them dry. They are bonded with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue); polystyrene cement will not join resin. Paint then holds considerably better over primer.

Who the set is for

  • Modelers who build the Centurion in 1:35 scale and detail the hull
  • Builders of vignettes with stowed equipment and tarpaulins
  • More experienced modelers who do not mind small resin parts

This is an accessory for modifying a model, not a kit of the vehicle. The parts are supplied unpainted; the base kit, the glue and the paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise. Check the exact contents on the box.

FAQ

It is not. It is an accessory set of small hardware that mounts onto a model built from another kit. The vehicle itself, the glue and the paints are not in the package, unless stated otherwise.

Not stated by the manufacturer. The tie-down loops on the Centurion differed in shape and in the way they were attached according to the production batch and the operating army, so the number distinguishes one of those patterns. Which one you need is best checked on the box and against a photograph of the particular machine you are building.

Cyanoacrylate glue (super glue), ideally in a gel or medium consistency so that there is time to align the part. Polystyrene cement will not dissolve resin, so the joint does not hold and the part falls off before long.

Yes. Uncured print resin residue is left on the surface of a print and it stops paint from keying. Warm water with a drop of dish soap, a soft brush and thorough drying are enough. Then apply primer and only then the top coat.
