Sheet of a thickness correct to scale: 1:35 Elefant/Ferdinands Fenders (dragon) replaces the coarse plastic fenders of the heavy tank destroyer in both forms.
Responsibility details are not available.
In reality a fender is sheet a few millimeters thick. It cannot be molded in 1:35 scale from polystyrene, and so the plastic parts are necessarily thick and clumsy to look at. The photo-etched replacement from Royal Model removes this disproportion and, what is more, allows what is not possible with plastic: bending a corner, lifting a loosened piece or leaving one part out altogether. The set serves as equipment for a kit you already have.
On heavy German vehicles the fenders were among the first things to suffer. They caught on the terrain, bent when reversing into a trench or were torn off by a track shoe. Period photographs show machines with one corner torn out and the other bent upward, and that is exactly what makes a model lively. With a plastic part you cannot do such a thing; with brass you can, and tweezers and a little patience are enough.
Take the part out of the fret with a cut on a mat, not by twisting. Make the bends along the marked scores, preferably in a bending tool. Suggest dents with a blunt point over a layer of soft rubber, so that the sheet does not crack. Before painting, degrease the brass and use a primer meant for metal. A bent edge deserves a hint of bare metal, because it was exactly there that the finish rubbed off first in service.
