Sd.Kfz.251 Ausf.A 1:35 wheel masking stencil (Quickwheel)

This is a flexible die-cut masking stencil intended for models of the German Sd.Kfz.251 Ausf.A armored half-track in 1:35 scale. It is neither a kit nor a set of wheels, but an aid that saves a great deal of time separating the rubber tire band from the disc on the interleaved road wheels of the tracked running gear.

How the mask works

The wheel is pushed into the cutout and settles onto the flexible material of the stencil. The raised rims cover the disc and protect the rubber tire band from overspray. The wheels are sprayed in a dark shade first, then, once it is dry, the stencil is laid on and the vehicle color is applied with an airbrush. The masks can be used repeatedly.

The real subject

The Sd.Kfz.251 was a German armored half-track of the Second World War. The early Ausf.A version stood at the beginning of a long production line. The interleaved road wheels of the tracked running gear carry rubber tire bands that are masked separately.

Use and tips

• Do not stretch the stencil, so that it keeps the shape of the cutouts.
• Press the edges against the model with a blunt point.
• Apply thin coats and avoid spraying twice along the edges of the mask.
• Suited above all to an airbrush; wash the mask after use and keep it.
