A sheet from the Colours and Codes series with the national insignia of the Royal Canadian Air Force: roundels with the maple leaf of the Silver Maple Leaf series in the middle. It is not the markings of one named aircraft or a sheet of maintenance stencils - it is a stock of roundels for a machine the modeler chooses. The manufacturer also divides the series into sheets defined by size: it lists the 84-inch roundel under the part number ADD72C050-4 and the atypical sizes under ADD72C050-6. A survey of types with the usual use of sizes and placements belongs with the sheets of the series. Check the range of sizes on the box.

The real subject

During the war the Royal Canadian Air Force used a roundel of British cut. Right after it, it replaced the red center disc with a red maple leaf on a white field, and this form lasted until 1965, when it gave way to the simplified eleven-point leaf of the new national flag. The word silver in the name of the series belongs to the species of maple from which the leaf takes its natural shape - not to the color of the leaf, which is red. The size differed with the type of aircraft and with the surface the insignia stood on.

Application tips

Decals are not applied with modeling cement. They go onto dried gloss varnish, are seated with water and a decal fixer and, on broken surfaces, with a decal softener, so that the film follows the rivets and panel lines. Cut the individual markings out close to the artwork. With roundels it pays to lay the cut decal on dry first and check that the size matches a photograph of the machine.
