Responsibility details are not available.
An injection-molded plastic kit of the American Grumman TBF-1 Avenger carrier-borne torpedo bomber in 1:72 scale from Academy. It is a large three-seat machine, so the model comes out at a good size even in the smaller scale. The box holds a plastic sprue, clear parts and a decal sheet.
The Avenger was the largest single-engined carrier aircraft of the Second World War. It had a roomy bomb bay in the fuselage that took a torpedo or bombs, a crew of three men and a gun turret on its back. Its combat debut at Midway ended in disaster, with only one of six machines returning, but the type quickly became the most important Allied carrier torpedo bomber. It was Avengers that took part in sinking the Japanese battleships Musashi and Yamato, and they served as anti-submarine machines as well; the later US President George Bush Sr. flew an Avenger too.
Finish and paint the inside of the cockpit and the dorsal turret before you close the fuselage up — on an aircraft with this much glazing you can see inside. The turret glazing has a number of frames, so painting masks or very careful work with tape are worth having. The three-tone camouflage of the US Navy is sprayed from the top down with a slight transition between the shades. Fit the folding wing last, if the kit offers it. Paint the torpedo or the bombs separately.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
