A round brush with natural Kolinsky sable hair, in size 00, from the Gold Series. Natural hair has two essential advantages over synthetic: it holds paint better and returns to a point by itself after a stroke. On the smallest sizes that is precisely what decides the matter, because without a perfect point fine detail cannot be painted.
Size 00 is the smallest size in common use and is made for the eyes of figures, for small markings and lettering, for suggesting seams and buckles and for drawing thin lines. It is not a brush for areas; it does not suit applying base coats or dry-brushing, because it would quickly be ruined. On figures in small scales it is used for the final work on the expression.
Pick the paint up only on the point, never up to the metal ferrule, because dried paint at the ferrule splays the hair and from then on the brush is useless. Thin the paint; thick paint ruins the point. After work, wash the brush out, shape the hair with your fingers and let it dry lying flat. Do not use it for mixing paint or applying pigments; keep a separate older brush for that.
