Polystyrene sheets 1 mm thick

A polystyrene sheet is a basic raw material of the modeling bench. Of the thicknesses in common use, one millimeter is the versatile one: it is stiff enough to build walls, floors, bulkheads and load-bearing structures from, and it can still be cut with a knife without a saw. The material is parted by scoring and snapping, the joints hold with cement for plastics, which softens the surface, so that a real weld arises and not just a glued edge. It sands easily and takes a primer well.

Use

• Score the cut with a knife along a ruler in a few light strokes and then snap the sheet; do not cut through.
• True the edge up with a file after snapping, as a break never comes out entirely straight.
• Glue with cement for plastics; the joint holds better than with cyanoacrylate glue.
• Stiffen larger areas from the back with a strip of the material, as a sheet on its own will sag with time.
• Scribe the engraved details before gluing, as it cannot be done on a finished assembly.
• Free the surface of grease before painting and apply a primer.

Who it is for

The material is for modelers who build conversions, complete dioramas or make what a kit does not have. Working with it is not demanding on tools but rather on forethought, because anything can be made from a flat sheet, but you have to work the dimensions out for yourself.

Do not leave offcuts lying about and store the material out of the reach of children. When sanding, work in a ventilated room and do not inhale the dust.
