Plastic kit of the Israeli M50 Mk.2 Super Sherman tank on the M4A4 hull with HVSS suspension, in 1:35 scale from Rye Field Model. It is the extended release (Upgrade Version), which besides the injection-molded plastic also contains photo-etched parts, 3D-printed components and workable tracks assembled link by link; clear parts and decals are included. Against the basic (Standard) release of the same model, the Upgrade Version rests on a wider offering of extra and alternative parts, so it is the box for a modeler who wants to build the most detailed machine straight out of the box without buying accessories separately.
The M50 is not the Sherman of Normandy. It is an Israeli upgrade of the American Sherman: in the mid-1950s Israel rearmed its machines with a French 75 mm gun (of the same origin as the armament of the AMX-13 light tank), which produced a tank with substantially greater penetration than the original American 75 mm gun. The Mk.2 version also received a Cummins diesel engine and HVSS suspension with wide tracks, which helped it considerably in sand. The M50 fought in Sinai in 1956, in the Six-Day War in 1967 and in 1973; they left service only at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s and some machines ended their days outside Israel as well. The result is an immediately recognizable silhouette: a classic Sherman, but with a long barrel ending in a muzzle brake.
Tracks assembled link by link are exactly what makes a tank model come alive: they let you give the track its natural sag over the return rollers and its bite into the ground. Allow, though, for a laborious and lengthy stage; it pays to assemble the links without gluing them fixed, paint them separately and fit them only once the hull is finished. Finish the running gear and the internal detail before you close the hull and fit the fenders. Israeli equipment is a rewarding subject for weathering: dust, faded paint, worn edges and caked mud around the running gear will do more for the result than the most carefully mixed base shade. Use liquid cement for plastic, spray a gloss coat under the decals and glue the fine photo-etched parts with cyanoacrylate glue.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
