An injection-molded plastic kit of the Culver PQ-14A/B in 1:72 scale from Clear Prop Models. It is a modern short-run kit with finely rendered detail and engraving that covers both main versions of the aircraft in one package - the PQ-14A as well as the PQ-14B. Clear Prop kits usually also include small extras such as photo-etch and masks; the exact contents of the package are given in the manufacturer's catalog.
The Culver PQ-14 Cadet was an American radio-controlled target aircraft of the Second World War period, derived from the prewar civilian Culver Model LFA light aircraft. It served mainly to train antiaircraft gunners, for whom it simulated maneuvering enemy fighters. It was powered by a single Franklin piston engine of about 150 horsepower, had a wooden structure with plywood skin and retractable landing gear. It flew unmanned by remote control, but a pilot could also fly it on transit flights.
As with most short-run kits it pays to clean the parts of flash carefully and to sand the mating surfaces, because the fit calls for more care than with mainstream molds. Bond the joints with a thin plastic cement, apply primer before painting and ideally spray the camouflage with an airbrush. The striking yellow or silver schemes of target machines come out best over a smooth base and a gloss coat under the decals.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
