A conversion set from the maker AML in 1:144 scale for the Consolidated PBY-5 Catalina flying boat. It contains parts for adding a magnetic anomaly detector (MAD) and the launch rails of anti-submarine rockets (retrorockets), usually together with the matching decals. It is not an aircraft kit but an accessory to a plastic model of the matching scale, which is not in the package.
The Catalina served as a long-range patrol and anti-submarine flying boat. The MAD system detected the disturbance of the magnetic field by the large metal mass of a submerged vessel, which let the aircraft pin down a submarine's position more precisely. Anti-submarine rockets launched from rails widened its options for attacking submerged and surface targets alike.
Wash the resin or printed parts free of mold release agent, separate the casting blocks and glue them with super glue. A conversion usually calls for measuring out and cleaning up the places where the new parts are to be seated. Apply the decals over a gloss base and fix them with a clear coat. Follow the manufacturer's instructions.
