This is not an aircraft model but a detail set for improving the cockpit: two 3D printed ejection seats in 1:72 scale from the manufacturer Eduard. The set is intended for F-14 D Tomcat kits from Tamiya and replaces the seats from the box. Two pieces correspond to the two-seat cockpit of the Tomcat – one seat for the pilot, the other for the weapon systems officer.
The Grumman F-14 Tomcat was a carrier fighter of the US Navy with a variable-geometry wing. The last production version, the F-14 D, was given General Electric F110 engines, modernized avionics and a digital cockpit. Unlike the earlier F-14 A and F-14 B versions it was equipped with the new naval Martin-Baker Mk.14 ejection seats (the NACES system), which appeared on other carrier types at the same time. The shape of the seat is one of the features in the cockpit by which the D version is recognized – which is why it pays to replace it with a more accurate part on a model, especially when you build with the canopy open.
Cut the parts off the print supports with a sharp scalpel, sand the faces and wash them in lukewarm soapy water. They are glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). We recommend spraying the seats with a primer and painting them separately, before you set them into the cockpit – once the fuselage is closed you can no longer get to them. The detail shows to advantage after a dark wash and a fine dry brush; the belts and the ejection handles are worth picking out by hand with a brush. Before the final gluing, dry-fit the seat to check that it seats correctly in the cockpit tub of the base kit, and take up any slack with light sanding.
The set contains only the ejection seats – it is not an aircraft kit. The base model, glue and paints are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
