What you have in front of you is a sheet of water-slide decals from the Japanese maker Studio27 in 1:24 scale. It is intended for the BMW Z4 plastic kit from Fujimi and it is certainly not a kit: you will not get plastic, wheels or a body, but strictly the markings. You have to obtain the model separately, otherwise there will be nothing to apply them to.

Three cars on one sheet, race numbers 1, 20 and 91, is an above-average helping. A box with a kit offers one or two liveries, while the real Z4 GT3 raced with plenty of customer teams. Anyone who wants to build one particular car from a particular season has to reach for a separate sheet. On top of that, three numbers let you make three different models, or you can choose one and keep the rest in reserve. Other Z4 liveries were made as well.

The real subject

The BMW Z4 GT3 is a customer racing special that BMW supplied to private teams under the GT3 rules. The car appeared in many series all over the world and its first full season falls in 2010, among other things at the endurance races at the Nürburgring, where the Z4 GT3s of the Schubert Motorsport team finished in the overall top ten on their very debut. The year 2010 in the name therefore matches reality; it is not a typo.

The Nordschleife, where these cars made their name, is one of the hardest tracks in the world: over 20 kilometers and more than 70 corners. A model of a car from this era is therefore a rewarding subject, a display piece included.

Practical advice for applying the decals

• The base must be glossy. A decal laid on matte clear coat silvers: air stays under the film and a milky patch appears. It is the most common mistake in working with such sheets and it cannot be ironed out afterwards.
• The Z4 body has a lot of curved areas. Without decal softener the film lifts and makes folds; with softener it sucks down even into a recess and around a fender.
• Once the decals have dried, clear coat and polishing follow. The edge of the decal disappears and the surface takes on that typical wet shine of a racing car.
• The shade of the body has to match under the decal. A sheet will never cover the whole area, the rest is sprayed with paint. So choose the paint before you start applying them.
