A sheet of water-slide decals from Studio27 in 1:24 scale for the Jaguar XJ-S kit from Hasegawa. This is not a kit: the sheet holds only the markings and instructions for their placement. The model of the car, paints and clear coats have to be obtained separately.
The Jaguar XJ-S was a large, heavy and luxurious coupe with a V12 engine, a car created for comfortable runs along a motorway. And it was precisely this car that Tom Walkinshaw took with his TWR team and sent racing among touring cars under the then new Group A rules. A beautifully absurd idea which worked, though: the XJ-S with the black livery of the sponsor Motul (a maker of motor oils) began to win in 1982 and became one of the most charismatic touring cars of its time. In the same year the pairing of Tom Walkinshaw and Chuck Nicholson also won the RAC Tourist Trophy with the XJ-S, a trophy whose history reaches back to 1905 and which is therefore among the very oldest in motor sport. The sheet reproduces the cars with race numbers 3 and 4.
The body of the XJ-S has to be sprayed beforehand, as the sheet does not cover the whole area, so the paint under the decals has to match the printing, otherwise the transition will be noticeable. A dark base livery forgives fewer mistakes in the preparation of the surface: it is a good idea to sand the large flat areas of the coupe thoroughly before painting. Decals are applied strictly to gloss clear coat; on matte clear coat air is trapped under the film and the decal silvers. The sponsor lettering on the XJ-S runs across the rounded fenders and edges, so decal softener comes in handy, which draws the film to the shape. The clear coat that follows and polishing hide the edges of the decals and give the body a wet gloss, which pays off twice over on a dark livery.
The package contains decals only. The kit, paints, glue, clear coats and softener are not part of the delivery.
