McLaren MP4/24 — Monaco Grand Prix 2009 in 1:20 scale from Studio27. A multimedia kit for experienced modelers — resin, metal castings, photo-etched parts, rubber tires and decals, not a plastic kit.
Responsibility details are not available.
A multimedia kit from Studio27 in 1:20 scale. It is a kit — but a resin one and for the experienced, not a plastic kit for beginners. The designation Multimedia Kit means a combination of materials: resin for the body and the main parts, metal castings for the small elements, photo-etched sheet for grilles, straps and thin edges, and with them rubber tires, decals and any clear parts. The parts have no pins or sockets — the build is about dry fitting, sanding and fitting together.
The reason such sets exist and are bought: nobody makes this car from this race in plastic. A short-run multimedia set is the only way to one particular car from one particular Grand Prix — hence the limited availability and the interest of collectors.
Monaco is the most famous race in the world — narrow city streets hemmed in by barriers, the climb to the palace, the famous tunnel and corners where a mistake is not forgiven, because run-off areas practically do not exist. It is here that both car and driver are found out.
The 2009 season was cruel for McLaren, though: the reigning world champion Lewis Hamilton was given the MP4/24, a car that at the start of the year was not a match for the competition — the aerodynamic deficit showed up in testing already. At Monaco that came out in full; the race was not one of the good ones and the team took no joy away from it. What matters, though, is what came afterwards: McLaren developed the car during the year and Hamilton went on to win twice with it. The MP4/24 from Monaco is therefore interesting precisely as a snapshot of the car in its hardest period — and as proof that a season can be turned around.
Start by washing the parts in warm water with detergent and a brush. Mold release agent clings to the castings — if you do not wash it off, the paint will not grip and will peel once dry. This is the most common reason a resin model fails. Once dry, apply filler primer.
Next: resin cannot be glued with plastic cement, you need cyanoacrylate glue. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, not with nippers, and clean up the flash. Resin dust is harmful to health — sand strictly wet, with a respirator and with ventilation. Bend the photo-etched sheet with a bender, or with a razor blade and tweezers. The metallic silver and red livery will not tolerate an imperfect surface — the better sanded and filled the base, the better the result. Apply the sponsor decals onto a gloss clear coat and seal them.
The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted, as a multimedia kit. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
