A sheet of waterslide decals from Studio27 with long straight stripes in fluorescent yellow, in two widths — 5 mm and 8 mm. These are not the decals of one particular car and not a kit, but a general-purpose decorative material: you cut the stripe to length and apply it where you need it. It is not tied to a scale — it works in 1:24, 1:20, 1:48 and elsewhere, because all that counts is the width of the line in millimeters.

What it is for — and the real problem it solves

Drawing a perfectly straight line with a brush is next to impossible, and masking a stripe with tape is slow work during which the paint likes to creep underneath anyway. With fluorescent colors a second and even worse problem is added: fluorescent shades have very weak coverage and are translucent. To glow at all they need a white base and several coats — and the more coats, the greater the risk that an edge will bleed or that the masking tape will pull the paint off. A ready-made decal solves this elegantly: you get a saturated, even high-visibility color with a sharp edge without a single pass of the airbrush.

Where a strong high-visibility yellow comes in handy:

• Modern racing cars — high-visibility stripes, outline lines, frames and dividing lines between colors.
• Rescue and police vehicles — reflective bands on vehicles.
• Aircraft — warning and marking stripes.
• Generally details on cars and motorcycles, but also tanks, figures and dioramas where you need a line that stands out.

Two widths on one sheet (5 mm and 8 mm) give flexibility — the wider band for the main areas of a body or a fuselage, the narrower one for trim and details.

Usage tips

Apply onto a gloss clear coat — on matte paint air is trapped under the film and the line starts to silver, which on a long straight stripe shows at first glance. Cut the stripes with a sharp scalpel and a new blade; a blunt blade will fray the decal and the edge will no longer be straight. Measure twice — once dry, the line will not move. On curved surfaces a decal softener is essential, otherwise a long line will ripple and will not follow the shape. Finally cover it with clear varnish and polish it if you wish; it is better not to put a strongly matte varnish over a fluorescent shade, because matting suppresses its glow.
