1:24 Nissan 240Z Rally – Upgrade Parts (for Hasegawa Kits) is a photo-etched set of detail parts for the rally 240Z plastic kit from Hasegawa. It is NOT a kit — it is a package of additional parts for a kit you already have to have.
Responsibility details are not available.
This is not a kit and you will not build anything out of it on its own. It is a package of detail parts made of photo-etched metal, intended for the rally Nissan (Datsun) 240Z plastic kit from Hasegawa. The kit has to be obtained separately — the set merely lifts it. It is made by the Japanese company Studio27.
Why do modelers reach for photo-etched parts? Injection-molded plastic cannot do a thin edge — a fitting cast in plastic is a wedge, a grille a solid wall with an engraved pattern. Metal sheet a few tenths of a millimeter thick looks in 1:24 the way it should. And on a rally special that shows most on the inside: the interior is not hidden under trim but open — the cage, the seats, the belt webbing, the co-driver's instruments. A photo-etched buckle with webbing threaded through it looks like a real belt; a plastic imitation never does.
The Datsun (Nissan) 240Z is an elegant coupe with an inline six — and at the same time a car with one of the toughest rally stories of all. It won the Safari Rally in East Africa, and did so twice: in 1971 (Edgar Herrmann and Hans Schuller) and in 1973 (Shekhar Mehta and Lofty Drews).
The Safari was no ordinary rally. It was the harshest event in the world: thousands of kilometers through the African bush, several days on end, on roads not closed to ordinary traffic — with wildlife and with people on them. The cars ran with raised suspension, guards and massive kangaroo bars at the front. Reaching the finish was a victory in itself, and most of the field did not manage it. And a Japanese car beat the established European competition there — which at the time was a shock that changed the way Japanese manufacturers were seen.
Photo-etched sheet is bent (a bender pays off), it is glued with cyanoacrylate glue — cement for plastic does not hold on metal — and on some parts the original plastic detail has to be sanded away. That step is irreversible, so think the sequence through in advance. Degrease the metal before painting and cover it with primer. Working with photo-etched parts is slower and suits more experienced modelers.
And above all: a rally car is not supposed to be clean. A model that gleams as if from a showroom looks false on this subject. Dust on the fenders, dried mud in the wheel arches, worn edges around the door handles — the Safari was above all about dirt and about lasting. Weathering (washes, pigments, dust and mud effects) is called for here, not optional.
The set holds additional parts only. The basic kit, the glue, the paints and the tools are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.
