About product

Ferrari F60 (2009) 1:20 — a Studio27 multimedia kit

A kit of the Ferrari F60 Formula 1 single-seater of the 2009 season in 1:20 scale from the maker Studio27. The designation Multimedia Kit means that the model is not made of injection-molded plastic: it combines resin castings for the body and the main parts, white metal for the suspension and small structural elements, photo-etched brass sheet for thin details, rubber tires and decals. It is a full kit, but a demanding one — for the advanced. The exact make-up of the particular package is not stated here.

The real subject

The F60 was the Ferrari stable's car for the 2009 season and the first Ferrari fitted with the KERS system (kinetic energy recovery). The year 2009 brought a major change of the rules and for Ferrari it was one of the worst seasons of the modern era — in the end fourth place in the constructors' cup. Beware of a widespread error: the F60 did win a race — Kimi Räikkönen took victory with it in the Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps. The second driver was Felipe Massa, who did not finish the season after a serious accident at the Hungarian Grand Prix, when a spring that had come loose from another car struck him; in the remaining races substitute drivers took his place.

Building and painting tips

The most important advice to start with: wash the resin parts thoroughly before painting — warm water, detergent, a soft brush, then let them dry completely. Mold release agent stays on the castings, and if it is not removed, the paint will not grip and will peel once dry. It is the most common reason a resin model fails. Next: resin cannot be glued with thin cement for plastic — you need cyanoacrylate glue. The parts have no pins or sockets, so dry fit, sand and fit everything together. Cut the casting blocks off with a saw, not with nippers — resin cracks. Resin dust is harmful to health: sand wet and with a respirator. Bend the photo-etched parts with a bender, not with your fingers. Apply primer (filler) under the paint, a gloss clear coat under the decals and the final varnish according to the look you want.

Who the model is for

  • Experienced modelers who have already built from resin and white metal
  • Collectors of Formula 1 single-seaters in 1:20 scale
  • Fans of Ferrari and of the 2009 season (the KERS era)
  • Modelers who want a car that is not made in ordinary plastic
  • Not suitable for beginners, nor for building without cyanoacrylate glue

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

No. It is a multimedia kit — the main parts are resin, supplemented by white metal, photo-etched parts, rubber tires and decals. The building procedure differs from that of a plastic kit.

Cyanoacrylate glue. Thin cement for plastic works neither on resin nor on white metal — you would assemble nothing with it. Two-part epoxy comes in handy for larger areas.

Mold release agent stays on resin castings. If it is not removed with warm water, detergent and a brush, the paint will not grip the surface and will start to peel once dry. It is the most common cause of a ruined resin model.

Yes. Although the 2009 season was very weak for Ferrari and it finished fourth in the constructors' cup, Kimi Räikkönen took victory with the F60 in the Belgian Grand Prix.
