About product

The real subject

Crossbowmen on horseback belonged in the first half of the 15th century to the forces of the Teutonic Order, which at that time waged wars in Prussia and in the Baltic. Compared with the bow, the crossbow was slow to draw, but the bolt had great penetrating power and the shooter managed without the years of training that a bow demanded. The horse served mainly for a quick move to a place from which the shooter had a favorable view.

What the set contains

This is a set of figures in 1:72 scale, that is riders with crossbows and their horses. The number of figures and the extent of the accessories are given on the packaging and in the instructions enclosed by the manufacturer. A figure at this scale is not quite twenty-five millimeters, so the set suits painting on its own as well as serving as an addition to a more numerous scene with infantry.

Building and painting tips

Wash and degrease the figures before painting. Cut the excess material off with a sharp blade a little away from the part and sand the rest carefully, so that the engraving of the folds is preserved. Apply the paint in thin layers, because a thick layer will reliably flood the small relief at a small scale. A darker base and gradual lightening of the raised places has proved itself, because on a figure of this size it is the contrast that decides legibility. Leave the crossbow, the straps and the bridle to the end; these are the thinnest places and the paint rubs off them easily in handling.

Who it is for

The set will be appreciated by modelers who build medieval battlefields at a small scale, and by collectors of historical figures. Paints and glue are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

The number of figures and horses is given on the packaging and in the instructions enclosed by the manufacturer. It does not follow from the name of the item.

In 1:72 scale a standing figure comes out at not quite twenty-five millimeters. A rider with a horse is of course taller.

They are not. A set of figures is supplied; paints and glue are not part of it, unless stated otherwise.

In thin layers, on a darker base and with gradual lightening of the raised places. Leave the thinnest elements, that is the crossbow and the straps, until last.
