Two strips of model hedge from the German maker HEKI with a profile of twenty-five by seven millimeters in a thuja version. A tall thuja hedge is typical in built-up areas wherever the owner wanted privacy: it is opaque, dark and stays dense all year. On a model it therefore works as a reliable screen and at the same time as a small story about who lives behind it.

How to work with the hedge

The strip is cut with scissors and glued with PVA glue directly onto the base. A taller hedge holds upright less well, so prop it up while it dries. Level the ends and sprinkle granulate over them so the cut is not visible. A dark hedge is conspicuous on a light base, so add darker growth or shadow at its foot and the transition will not be so harsh. On longer runs, vary the height slightly in places.

For builders of layouts and dioramas with housing and for modelers who need an opaque evergreen screen. A tall thuja hedge also suits the edge of a scene, where the view should end before it reaches the edge of the baseboard. It is a material that gets used up quickly on a layout, so it helps to allow for a reserve. This is modeling material, not a toy. The manufacturer marks its scenery products as unsuitable for children under fifteen.
