Ten grass strips from the German maker HEKI, one hundred millimeters long, with growth five to six millimeters high, in a dark green shade. Dark grass on a model means damp and shade, so a strip of it suits exactly those places where water stands in the landscape: in ditches, at the foot of an embankment, along watercourses and on the north-facing sides of slopes. Used in the right place it gives an area depth; scattered everywhere it weighs it down instead.
The strips are not self-adhesive; they are fixed with modeling glue, ideally a flock adhesive or PVA glue. Apply a thin line of glue and lay the strip into it, shortening it with scissors if needed. A dark strip comes into its own when lighter grass lies next to it, so it pays to combine two shades and keep the transition between them irregular. Fray the ends of the strip slightly so the cut is not visible.
For layout and diorama builders who work with light and shade, and for modelers fine-tuning the damp places in a scene. Dark strips also suit marking the spot where water seeps out of a slope, because that is where grass tends to be at its deepest green. This is modeling material, not a toy. The manufacturer marks its scenery products as unsuitable for children under fifteen.
