Light porphyry ballast, grain size 0.5 to 1 mm, 500 g

Scatter ballast of crushed porphyry in a lighter version. Grain size nought point five to one millimeter, and the box weighs half a kilogram. The material is poured onto the bed under the track and fixed with thinned glue.

When to reach for light stone

A light bed suits dry, sunlit country, branch lines and sections that have just been repaired. On a model it has one practical advantage: weathering stands out on a light base, so the difference between a grimy track area at a passing loop and a clean stretch on the open line can be shown well. Anyone who wants both buys two shades and mixes them in the transition.

How to lay the ballast

• Brush it out with a soft brush into a regular bed profile
• Dampen the area and flood it with thinned glue
• Apply weathering only once it has dried, otherwise it bleeds
• Make sure the material does not get into turnouts
• Remove loose grains once it has dried

The manufacturer is a German company specializing in scenery accessories, and production takes place in Germany. Safety note: a loose natural material does not belong in the hands of children under three because of the risk of inhalation. Test the shade on a scrap beforehand: once glue is flooded on the stone darkens and the result differs from the dry sample more than expected. Keep any leftover material in a closed container, otherwise dust gets into it and the shade changes.
