A decal sheet in 1:72 scale aimed at Spitfires of the Mk.IX version with the e series wing in the armament of the Turkish Air Force. It is an accessory to a plastic kit; there are decals only in the package. The manufacturer Tiger Head Models is a Turkish brand, which with this subject shows in an emphasis on home users — sets of this kind tend to be worked out in more detail than the decals enclosed with an ordinary kit. The exact make-up of the markings is given in the manufacturer's data.
Turkey operated Spitfires as part of its postwar fighter armament at a time when piston machines were gradually being replaced by jets. The Mk.IX version was a logical choice for such a transitional force: it was available in surplus, it had good flying qualities at greater altitudes and it had proved itself in service. The letter e in the designation refers to the armament version of the wing, which combined cannon with heavy machine guns. The Turkish machines carried their own national insignia and system of marking, so they differ from British and Allied machines at first sight.
On a Spitfire the national insignia go onto the fuselage and onto both sides of the wing, that is onto surfaces with different curvature. Apply them first, while you have free space around you, and only afterward add the small numbers and lettering. The surface must be glossy and completely cured, otherwise the mark of a cotton swab will be pressed into the paint. Once dry, check against the light whether air has got stuck anywhere — a small prick with a needle and a drop of decal softener solve the problem before the final clear coat fixes it.
