About product

Bf-110 - a reconnaissance conversion with a serial camera 1:48 (Tiger Head Models)

A conversion set from the Tiger Head Models brand in 1:48 scale for models of the German twin-engine heavy fighter Bf-110. The package does not contain the aircraft itself; it is an accessory with which a built or part-built model is altered into the form of a photo reconnaissance version fitted with a serial camera for photographing from altitude.

The real subject

The Bf-110 came about as a twin-engine machine with a long range and a crew of two. In the fighter role it did not make its mark against single-engine opponents as had been expected, but all the more often it carried out tasks where its endurance, load and the room in its fuselage came in useful: night intruder missions, attacks on ground targets and photo reconnaissance. Reconnaissance machines carried a vertically mounted serial camera in the rear fuselage, which during flight automatically photographed a strip of terrain with an overlap, so that continuous map strips could be assembled from the pictures. The designations of German aerial cameras of the period were derived from their optical parameters and the frame format, so focal lengths of different lengths served for different flight altitudes. The conversion set carries this equipment over to a model, including the characteristic bay under the fuselage.

Building and painting tips

A conversion, unlike a mere accessory, means an intervention in the plastic: count on cutting an opening for the camera and on careful measuring, ideally against the drawing that belongs to the set. Cut a smaller opening rather than a larger one and widen it gradually with a file. First wash the resin parts free of mold release agent, cut the casting blocks off with a saw and level the surfaces wet and with respiratory protection. It is glued with cyanoacrylate glue (super glue). Paint the inside of the bay before you close it, and suggest the optics with a drop of gloss varnish or of a transparent compound. The work is recommended rather for more experienced modelers.

Who the conversion is for

  • Builders of the Bf-110 in 1:48 scale who want the less usual reconnaissance version
  • More experienced modelers used to cutting into plastic and working with resin
  • Those interested in aerial photographic equipment of the Second World War
  • Collectors of conversion sets for German twin-engine machines

The accessory is supplied unpainted and without the base model. Glue, paints and the kit are not part of the package, unless stated otherwise.

FAQ

It is not. This is a conversion set with which you alter your own model of the Bf-110 in 1:48 scale.

Yes. The conversion counts on cutting an opening for the camera in the fuselage. Go a little at a time and widen the opening to size with a file.

During flight it photographed a strip of terrain at regular intervals with an overlap, so that a continuous image of the area flown over could be assembled from the pictures.

We recommend it rather to modelers who already have experience with resin and with altering plastic parts.
