Pre-cut painting masks for the glazing of the six-wheeled Stalwart, 1:35 scale, cut to suit models from Airfix.
Responsibility details are not available.
The glazing of a cab is the place on a model of a vehicle where the builder's patience shows. Cutting strips of masking tape by hand takes an hour, the edge wavers and the paint runs underneath. Pre-cut masks shorten that step to a few minutes and, above all, give all the frames the same width, which is exactly what we perceive as clean work when looking at a finished model.
The Alvis Stalwart is an off-road load carrier on three driven axles that can drive into water and swim using waterjets. From the mid-1960s the British Army used it to carry ammunition and fuel across terrain where trucks would have got stuck. The cab has large glazed areas with divided frames, and glass in the doors on top of that, so masking really is not a marginal job.
Wash and dry the clear parts first so that the mask holds. Peel it off with the point of a scalpel, lay it in the middle of the area and press it down from the center toward the edges, so that no air is left under it. Apply the paint in thin layers; one thick layer will run underneath more reliably than three thin ones. Take the mask off while the paint has only just flashed off, and the edge will then stay sharp. Any adhesive residue left by the mask is removed with cotton moistened in clean water.
Do not throw the rest of the sheet away once the build is finished. The offcuts come in useful for covering small areas on other models and for places that ordinary tape struggles to reach. Store them flat and out of direct sunlight, or the adhesive will strengthen over time and, on removal, will tear off the paint you have just finished along with it.
