A flat black acrylic paint from the French maker Heller. It is not a kit but a paint. The range is water-thinnable: ordinary water serves both as the thinner and as the cleaner, the paint dries fast and needs no solvents. The bottle holds 12 ml. A flat finish creates no highlights, so it works well where a surface is meant to stay inconspicuous.
A pure black has to be handled with care on a model. In scale it looks flat, absorbs light and reliably eats detail - an engraved line or a rivet disappears in a black surface. Experienced modelers therefore often reach for a very dark gray on dark areas and shadows, or mix black with another color (with blue or brown, for instance) to get a dark but living tone. The same holds for tires: real rubber in daylight looks more of a dark gray than a coal black. Keep a pure black for where it really makes sense - and lighten it everywhere else.
Flat acrylics generally tend to dry fast, so work with a sensible amount of paint on the brush and let the first coat dry before you add a second. Before decals a gloss varnish is usually applied under them - a flat black is in itself an unsuitable base for decals, and a decal would silver on it. Wash brushes with water right after work, as dried acrylic is considerably harder to remove.
For modelers of aircraft, vehicles, ships and figures who need a dependable flat black with no solvents - and appreciate fast drying and cleaning with water.
