An acrylic modeling paint from the French manufacturer Heller in the metallic shade Aluminium. Not a kit, but a paint. This entire Heller line is water-thinnable — it is thinned with water, brushes are washed with water, the paint dries quickly and does not fill the room with solvent fumes. The bottle holds 12 ml.
Heller has two metallic silvers, and the difference between them is in the character of the metal. 056 Aluminium is the more restrained one — more matte, with a grayish cast, like unpainted aluminum sheet. That makes it the natural choice for large areas of an aircraft's bare-metal skin. The shade 011 Silver, by contrast, is brighter and glossier, closer to polished metal; it suits details and areas meant to stand out. The surest approach is to paint both onto a scrap of plastic and decide by eye.
The aluminum particles settle to the bottom during storage, so stir the bottle thoroughly before applying it — otherwise you mostly apply the binder. The metal layer is a merciless mirror of the surface: every scratch and bit of leftover glue shows through under it, so sand the area smooth and degrease it first. Metallic paint also tolerates masking worse — tape can pull the layer off when removed, so leave metal areas for the end of the painting plan. One last rule: matte varnish over a metallic knocks the metallic shine down to a flat gray.
