A 122 mm howitzer gun barrel for the Soviet 2S1 Gvozdika self-propelled howitzer in 1:35 scale. It replaces the plastic barrel of the kit and removes both the mold parting line and the risk of a bent axis. Part of the shape is the distinctive fume extractor and the muzzle brake, which is where the inaccuracy of a plastic part shows the most.
The 2S1 Gvozdika was a Soviet 122 mm self-propelled howitzer on a tracked chassis, designed to be amphibious, so it could cross a water obstacle without preparation. It served with the artillery battalions of motor rifle units and spread to a number of Warsaw Pact armies and beyond. The turret was traversable and relatively tall, which gives the vehicle an unmistakable silhouette.
Degrease the barrel and dry fit it in the gun mantlet, and only then glue it with cyanoacrylate glue or epoxy. Apply a primer to the metal. Darken the muzzle and tone the area around the muzzle brake down with a dark cast, because that is exactly where the combustion residue settles. Bring the fume extractor out with a dry brush so that its shape stands out against the cylindrical barrel.
