Replacement hands and forearms cast in polyurethane resin serve to stop the soldiers in a display case looking like production castings. The fourth installment of the numbered range from the Italian brand Royal Model widens the choice of gestures that are not usually found on injection-molded figures. The box does not contain the figure itself.
Hands are the most eloquent place on a figure right after the face. An injection mold, however, has to be able to open around them, so the fingers come out thick and stuck together. A fine casting with separated fingers can hold even a small prop by contrast, a cigarette, a map or a hatch grab handle, and the whole story told by the figure changes at a stroke.
Cut the original hand off with a saw a little above the wrist and level the surface. It pays to drill a fine hole in both the stump and the new part and to join them with a short wire; a joint like that will survive handling. It is glued with cyanoacrylate, the gap is made good with modeling putty and the transition of the sleeve is sanded down. Degrease the part and spray it with a primer before painting.
Figures, wire, putty and paints are not supplied with this set.
