A chain cast in a kit as a solid piece of plastic is recognized even by a layman, because the links are not open. This accessory from the brand Royal Model offers a replacement: a photo-etched metal sheet carries several chains of differing gauge and with them hooks, shackles and small fittings. One property is worth knowing in advance, however.
It is a flat photo-etch, not a three-dimensional chain. It comes into its own where a chain lies on a surface or is visible from one side: tools lashed on a fender, a tow chain coiled on the armor, the securing of a gate, a chain at a well or a watch on a chain on a figure. Where a chain is to hang freely in the air and be visible from all sides, reach rather for a real metal chain, which the brand offers as separate goods.
Measure the length out in place, never in advance. The part is first only offered up and tried for fit; only then is it secured with a drop of cyanoacrylate glue applied with a pin. Most of the impression is made by bending it into a slight arc, because a straight line comes across as hard. The painting rests on contrast: a dark undercoat into the hollows between the links and the edges lifted lightly with a dry brush or a graphite stick will create the wear of metal. Rust belongs only where the chain does not move.
The material is without a surface finish; paints and glue are not included in the package.
