About product

VK4502(P) Hintern (turret at the rear) — 1:35, Hobby Boss

An injection-molded plastic kit of the German heavy tank prototype VK4502(P) in the Hintern variant, that is, with the turret placed at the rear of the hull and the engine in the middle, in 1:35 scale from Hobby Boss. The model has a detailed hull and running gear; depending on how the package is equipped, photo-etched parts are usually included as well. It is an unassembled and unpainted kit to be glued. Do not confuse it with the sister Vorne variant (turret at the front), which is a separate kit.

The real subject

The VK4502(P) was a heavy tank design from Porsche, one of the forerunners of the later Tiger II. Two layouts were considered: with the turret at the front (Vorne) and with the turret at the rear and the engine in the middle (Hintern). While the variant with the turret at the front was actually worked on, the layout with the turret at the rear stayed at the project stage. The turret of these designs gave the basis for the later production turret of the Tiger II.

Building and painting tips

Assemble the running gear before you close up the hull. Paint the armor surfaces with an airbrush, refine the camouflage and bring the surface to life with washes into the recesses and pigments for dust effects on the running gear. Before gluing, clean the flash and the sprue gate remnants off the parts and dry-fit the individual sections first; glue with thin cement for plastic, which joins the seam firmly and cleanly. For better paint adhesion lay down a primer first and paint in thin coats, ideally with an airbrush. Before weathering, even the surface out with a clear coat and let each layer dry thoroughly.

Who the model is for

The model is supplied unassembled and unpainted. Glue, paints and accessories are not included in the package, unless stated otherwise.

  • For anyone interested in German prototypes and heavy tank projects
  • For collectors of the variant with the turret at the rear (different from the version with the turret at the front)
  • For builders working in 1:35 scale
