The Sikorsky CH-54A is an American heavy crane helicopter. Instead of a fuselage with a cargo hold it has a slim load-carrying spine on tall landing gear, under which the load is slung or to which a detachable container is attached. Behind the cockpit is a rear-facing station from which the operator watches the load directly beneath the machine and maneuvers it. Power comes from a pair of turboshaft engines and the main rotor has six blades. The machines were used mainly to recover heavy wrecked equipment and to carry slung loads that smaller helicopters could not manage.
It is an accessory for building the CH-54A in 1:35 scale. It replaces or supplements kit parts and is aimed at a builder for whom the contents of the box do not reach the level of detail wanted. The make-up of the set and the exact purpose of the individual parts are given in the manufacturer's instructions; follow them when placing the parts on the model as well.
Before gluing, wash the parts in lukewarm water with detergent and let them dry completely; the paint will then hold considerably better. Cut the surplus material and production marks away with a sharp blade a little way from the part and sand the remainder down to nothing so that no step is left on the surface. Check what the parts are made of in the manufacturer's instructions: neither resin nor metal holds with cement for polystyrene, so make the joint with cyanoacrylate glue and, on larger parts, with epoxy. Apply a primer before painting; it evens the surface out and reveals small flaws.
For a modeler building the helicopter in 1:35 scale who wants the detail to match the rest of the model. Working with accessories assumes a steady hand when sanding and gluing; for a first attempt, pick a less conspicuous spot on the model.
