A resting pose is more valuable in modeling than it seems. A soldier who is not fighting just then gives a scene time and action: there is waiting, smoking, mending of equipment. This casting from the Italian brand Royal Model captures a grenadier in just such a moment and is executed in polyurethane resin with a fine rendering of the folds.
From 1942 the designation grenadier was carried by ordinary German infantry as a historicizing title following on from an older tradition. The year 1944 meant a pronounced shift in its kit: the field filled with camouflage blouses and helmet covers with a printed pattern, leather equipment was gradually replaced by pressed webbing and uniform patterns broke up into a varied mixture. It is exactly that inconsistency that makes figures from this period so rewarding to paint.
Start by washing the parts and removing the casting blocks with a cut close to the casting, then sand the remainder. Join the resin with cyanoacrylate glue, ideally gel, which gives you time to align it. Work the camouflage pattern from the bottom up: first the lightest undercoat, then patches of darker tones stippled on with a brush carrying a minimum of paint. Finally unify the whole with a weak glaze, so that the pattern does not shout.
The casting comes raw and unpainted; prepare your own paints and glue.
